The Wishing Trees
Wishing Trees are individual trees that are used as an object of wishes and offerings. Very special places, people have visited them through the centuries, burdened with a problem they wish to solve or a crisis they want to see the end of. They've voiced their hopes and wants to nature in the hope that their prayer will be answered by a nature spirit, saint or goddess, depending on the local tradition. Postulants also make votive offerings as a gesture of hope that their journey will be successful.
Even if we don’t believe that an external force will grant us our wishes, the process of taking the time to articulate something that may previously only have lived (hidden) inside, may for some be the first step in trying to move towards it.
I am not religious, however I do have my special trees around my locality. They have been noted by me on a walk, revisited and persistantly photographed over the past few years. Indeed, they document my transformation from making standard photographs through to the ones you see here in the gallery. Do I wish to them? No. But I definitely sit under them and reflect, make decisions or just empty my head of crap and become able to see the important things more clearly. So, for me, they are not magic, but they are magical. I don't offer to them, but my photos of them are in many ways expressions of thanks.
They are my Wishing Trees.
